Update 9-28-2004

Yes, I am finally beginning to update my site. Since I only have one college class to go, I feel free to pursue everything that I put aside.

Noah did catch up with his correct grade level. I am very proud of the hard work that he put in this past year. He is now in the third grade. Like all children he has his strong and weak points. He is strong in science and weak in reading. So, guess where we will focus this year.

Esther is excelling in her reading. I discovered in the spring of 2003 that she was dyslexic. The school she was in would not test her, so I had the testing completed at a local facility. My mother happened to know of a good program for me to use at home with her. You can't even tell she is dyslexic if you listen to her read. I tested her at the beginning of first grade for the dolche sight words she should know at the END of first grade. She knew over 80% of them. Now, her handwriting is a completely different story. She still needs a lot of work in this area. But as long as she is a good reader, I'm happy.

Anna started Kindergarten this year. She just couldn't wait another year. She is beginning to read simple words. It is slow going though. Since she is still four, I am not going to push her. I just let her lead. If she wants to learn the alphabet, we learn the alphabet. This is working really well for her. She is picking up quite a bit of information.

Past News:

Why do I homeschool?

I have chosen homeschool because I have a great love for my children as most parents do.

Home schooling is my way of showing them my love.

They are receiving a solid foundation for their education.

They get to participate in many extracurricular activities that they can be proud of.

They are allowed to progress at their own pace, however fast or slow that may be.

They will inevitably learn how to teach themselves while learning in this environment.

They are learning social skills through screened activities chosen by the parents, not through peers that the parents don't know.

Our Story

The fall of 2000 found us traveling quite a bit. I decided to purchase ABeka K4 material for his preschool work. We did quite a bit of the work. In the spring I wasn't' feeling well so he attended a local Christian school. We were not traveling as much at that time so we were able to do this.

The fall of 2001 I was still not feeling well so Noah went to public school for several weeks. When I finally felt well enough, I brought Noah home for schooling. Again, we used ABeka materials.

The fall of 2002 Noah started first grade at home while Esther started kindergarten at home. Well, most of you know that we had a major move in November. To facilitate this move we enrolled the kids in a Christian school near our new home. This was a setback for Noah because their first graders were writing in cursive. Noah was put back into kindergarten. He has been pretty bored. He has received high marks as most of the material is a review for him. Esther went into the K4 program at their school. She started the year using Saxon Math and Saxon Phonics for regular K5 kindergarten. However, the change in level has not affected her.

This summer will be a time for me to catch Noah up to his peers. I plan to have him go on to second grade in the fall. We will be using Saxon Math and Saxon Phonics for first grade over the summer since that is what we began using this past year.

Through all of this we have had many fieldtrips to zoos, aquariums, history museums, an air force museum, children's museums and many other great places. I hope to add some music related field trips this next year.

Beginning last year, we also supplemented reading time with the Robinson Curriculum. It will become our dominant reading source for the next several years.
